Graduate School

Welcome to the University of Cumbria.

All research degree candidates are members of the Graduate School.  Professor Richard McGregor is the Director of Research and Graduate Studies and Mrs Sonia Mason (who is your point of contact with the University of Cumbria administration) runs the Graduate School Office, which can be found on the ground floor of the Gressingham Building on the Lancaster Campus.

Office and ‘hot desk’ facilities for Graduate School candidates are located in the Gressingham Building. There is a student room available on the first floor, equipped with individual study and storage areas, a limited number of computers, and a printer. In addition, essential research resources and basic texts are available there for candidates’ use. A room is also available on the ground floor for PG candidates who wish to meet with their supervisors and can be booked via Sonia Mason.students with laptop

If you are using your University of Cumbria address in external correspondence, please make sure that you give your address as ‘Graduate School, The University of Cumbria, Bowerham Road, Lancaster LA1 3JD’. This will ensure that your mail is delivered to us correctly and we will let you know via email when any mail has been delivered for you so that you can collect it from us at your convenience.

Lancaster University registration

As a research degree candidate at the University of Cumbria, you are registered for a research degree at Lancaster University, administered and supervised at the University of Cumbria as explained in your handbook. Your research degree is governed by Lancaster University regulations and procedures, and you can find more information on the Lancaster University website. There is also a good deal of helpful information in the Research Students area of the Lancaster University website.

Support sessions

We have monthly support sessions for all our PGRs and staff. We try and respond to research degree candidates’ needs, and welcome suggestions for future sessions. There is also an annual Doctoral Colloquium for both candidates and staff involved with research degrees, and a ‘Cumbria Research and Enterprise’ conference where research degree candidates and UoC staff can present their work.

A Graduate School Blackboard VLE is available to all research degree candidates and supervisors. It contains abundant information about the University of Cumbria’s research degree programmes and provides discussion board facilities for candidates to network with each other and supervisors. For details on how to obtain Student Network Login and Password, visit http://www.knowledge.ucsm.ac.uk/question.php?qstId=117.

Research can be a lonely business, especially for part-time candidates so the Graduate School Office is always open to and supportive of ideas about how to maintain social and academic contact.

Professor Richard McGregorWe look forward to meeting you in the course of the year.
