Higher Level Apprenticeships: David's story
Our apprentice case studies give you an insight into what it's like to study a higher or degree level apprenticeship here at the University of Cumbria. David is an Administration Manager at the University of Cumbria, and is currently on the Higher Level Apprenticeship (Level 5) in Leadership and Management.
I work for the University of Cumbria on the Lancaster Campus, and manage the administrative processes that enable student teacher placements to take place. This involves managing a whole range of tasks as well as line managing 9 members of staff.
Why did you want to undertake a higher level apprenticeship?
I’d never studied a higher level qualification before undertaking the apprenticeship, and wanted to take the course due to my lack of qualification and a need to develop new skills and add to my expertise to meet the changing requirements of my role. I am hoping this will lead to career progression.
Which apprenticeship course did you undertake at the University of Cumbria?
Higher Level Apprenticeship (Level 5) in Leadership and Management.
How are you finding the apprenticeship experience?
It’s really interesting and I have found that the course helps my work practice. The volume of essays and the level of detail that needs to be covered is a challenge and takes careful management of time.
How does the learning on your course link to or compliment your job role?
The subject areas covered relate directly to my role in middle management and the ideas and concepts readily relate to the work place and also have a practical element.
What is your favourite part of the apprenticeship experience?
Satisfaction at the completion of an essay that is up to standard. I also enjoy the group work, and the chance to meet and discuss the topics of study with colleagues.
What effect do you hope doing this higher apprenticeship scheme will have on your career?
I am hoping that completing the apprenticeship will lead to career progression, and I’m already looking to complete a Masters after I’ve completed this course.
What would you say to other people thinking about enrolling onto a higher or degree apprenticeship?
Go for it, it’s really rewarding and will help you with your day to day management skills. You need to be prepared to put in the effort and hours, but it is worth it for the sense of satisfaction and achievement you will experience.
