I gained my degree in human psychology at Loughborough University and a degree in Occupational Therapy at Christ Church College Canterbury. I then worked as an Occupational Therapist in Cumbria, mainly in Mental Health and Management.

A move to lecturing happened in 2005, initially with St Martin's College and then University of Cumbria.
