Who is it for?
These courses are suitable for participants with a responsibility for programme delivery including programme managers, programme support office professionals, business change managers, and project managers. Participants should be already working in a programme environment, but no prior knowledge of the MSP method is required. Holding the PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification is an advantage. Participants on the Practitioner course are required to have passed the MSP® Foundation certificate.
Learning objectives
At the end of the Foundation course participants will be able to:
- Describe the purpose of all roles, processes and deliverables
- State which deliverables are input and output from which processes
- State the relationships between processes, deliverables, roles and the management dimensions of a programme
At the end of the Practitioner course participants will be able to:
- Produce worked examples of role descriptions, detailed explanations of processes, and worked examples of deliverables
- Show they understand the relationships between processes, deliverables, roles and the management dimensions of a programme, and can apply this
- Demonstrate that they understand the reasons behind the various elements of MSP, and that they understand the principles underpinning these elements
- Demonstrate their ability to apply and adapt MSP to different Programme circumstances
- Demonstrate an understanding of Programmes in context with Business Operations and Projects
Preparation and homework
There is a recommended five hours of pre-course reading required prior to attending the course, consisting of the AXELOS MSP Manual and workbook to ensure participants are prepared for, and gain the maximum benefit from the workshop.
Participants will also be required to do evening work during the week that the course is taking place.
Assessment format
For the Foundation qualification, participants will complete a closed book examination of 60 minutes’ duration consisting of 60 multiple choice questions. A pass mark of 36 (60%) is required to successfully complete this qualification.
For the Practitioner qualification, participants will complete a closed book examination of 2.5 hours duration at the end of the course. Participants are required to answer 58 questions, including 6 matching questions worth 3 marks each, and achieve a pass mark of 42 (60%) to successfully complete the qualification.

Conditions
If you have selected a course which is delivered online, please read the technical requirements before booking. If you are unable to undertake a booked course due to not having the required equipment, no refund will be offered.
Please note the specific terms applying to this course:
- Candidates are required to present a valid form of photographic ID prior to commencing the examination, such as a copy of their passport or driving licence.
Inclusions and exclusions
- Individual learning packs including presentations, sample papers and the AXELOS MSP Manual and exercise handouts will be issued to you, either electronically in the case of an online course, or in hard copy for in person courses.
- Upon successful completion of the course assessment, an Axelos/PeopleCert certificate will be sent to you in hard copy around 6 weeks after the course.
- Meals and refreshments are not included at in person courses. You will be able to bring your own lunch or buy food on or near the training premises.

If you have not conducted business with the University of Cumbria before, please be aware that both of us may have administrative procedures required to set up our respective customer/supplier accounts and the time taken to complete these may impact on the availability of places on your preferred course.
Payment, cancellation and changes
- Bookings, including purchase orders, to be received at least six weeks ahead of course start date.
- At our discretion, late bookings may be accepted: please check with us before sending a purchase order.
- Invoices will be issued six weeks before the course once delivery is confirmed (or immediately on receipt of an accepted late booking) and will be due for payment immediately. Full payment should be received by us prior to the course commencing.
- In the event that a booked delegate is unable to attend, substitutions will not be accepted and no refunds can be given.
- For all cancellations, UoC must be notified in writing via email to project.academy@cumbria.ac.uk.
- For online examinations, delegates choose an examination date and time from a range of options. If the chosen slot is changed or cancelled within 5 working days, the full examination fee is payable in respect of the cancelled slot AND in respect of the replacement slot.
