DISCOVER THE INSTITUTE OF HEALTH
Building on a strong track record, the unit reflects the University of Cumbria’s (UoC) long association with health and social care professions since the formation of St Martin’s College, Lancaster in 1964, from which Cumbria later developed.
Through the University’s Institute of Health and Centre for Research in Health and Society, our research focuses on major health challenges faced by our society. Our researchers investigate diagnostic and therapeutic interventions across several allied health professions, consequent implications for health and social care, healthy ageing, and improving effective patient communication in support of wellbeing.

Impact Case Studies
Underpinned by the university’s strategic intent to “contribute to the social, cultural and economic well-being and prosperity of our communities”, impact is integral to research activity. Staff work collaboratively on applying research into NHS settings and with a range of partners including the NHS, Age UK, Brathay Hall, Royal College of Occupational Therapy, College of Radiographers, and many others.
Two ‘impact case studies’ were submitted to REF2021, with details below.
