Class of 2016
Originally from Iraq, Laith is the first member of his family to study a university degree in the UK.
“I always wanted to go to university and study a degree there because I love studying and I always set high goals for me to reach. I chose to study at the University of Cumbria because it has a very good reputation nationwide for the high standards of teaching across all university programmes, but mainly health degrees.”
Choosing Diagnostic Radiography due to the mixture of health, science and IT, Laith most enjoyed taking part in placements on his course. “It helps me practice what I have learnt at the university whilst providing care to my patients, which always makes me feel good. I also like group work activities as it helps to strengthen the friendship between our class members while at the same time sharing other people ideas.”

It’s not just about the academic side of university though. “Being a student ambassador has been one of the best highlights that I will always remember as it helped strengthen my communication skills, presentation skills, organisation skills as well as team working skills and many other skills.” Laith’s commitment to his role led to him being nominated for Representative of the Year.
By sticking to his dreams, Laith has made some amazing achievements. “I am so proud of myself and what I have achieved over the years because I have learnt English from scratch in 7 years only and done everything I can to help me get into the university and study the degree I wanted.”
