Gaming, film & TV, and wildlife documentaries or photography all have something in common. They allow you to explore different worlds and follow a story. So if you have a passion for exploring, creating, discovering and capturing moments that entertaining and amaze our courses are just for you.
Close to the city centre of Carlisle in a beautiful, leafy setting, the University of Cumbria’s Institute of Arts is everything you need to inspire your creativity. Our courses are highly-practical and at least two-thirds focused on the development of your craft.
Our aim is to develop your professional knowledge and skills in order for you to forge a career within relevant industries including gaming, film and TV, media and communications, wildlife filming and photography. In addition, we have a strong focus on helping you to acquire skills required to pursue a freelance, portfolio career.
Our Game Design graduates have gone on to work on games such as Grand Theft Auto, Fable III, Killzone 2, and Crackdown 2 as well as on the post-production of films such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Happy Feet, Quantum of Solace and the Chronicles of Narnia.
Film & TV students have worked on films such as Star Wars: Episode VII - The Last Jedi and graduates have gone on to work for Disney, BBC, ITV. Nickelodeon and Ridley Scott Associates.
And Wildlife Media students and graduates have worked for institutions such as the National Trust and with filmmakers like Terry Abraham, the creator of BBC4 trilogy series Life of a Mountain.
Our experienced staff have professional backgrounds in relevant areas. We maintain strong connections with the industry to maximise opportunities for you to be taught by, and take part in, live projects or work placements.
Our students are regularly hired to work on large-scale productions that come to Cumbria. For example, we helped with filming at Hadrian’s Wall for Michael Fassbender’s Macbeth, and in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The scene of the X-Wing flying over the lake was done at nearby Derwentwater with support from our film students.
The purpose-built arts resources and equipment at our Institute of Arts at Brampton Road are excellent. Our highly practical courses are focused on the development of your skills and the atmosphere is friendly and lively. We aim to provide you with a rich, personal and unique experience and we have a proven record of excellence in teaching, student support and graduate employment.
The AV media resource areas used by Film and Television Production students has everything you will need to complete your film and television projects, including professional video-editing suites, cameras and sound recording equipment.
And Games Design students have primary access to three computer labs, with the most up to date versions of the industry standard software. Other dedicated resources include Wacom Tablets, Nikon D80s, HD Video cameras and all current major video game consoles.
