A new way to study Medicine in Cumbria

A new way to study Medicine in Cumbria name

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine is a new medical school, with the first students joining in August 2025. The programme will blend expertise from the highly rated MBBS programme at Imperial College London with the University of Cumbria’s longstanding reputation in training allied healthcare professionals.

The four-year course focuses on training doctors in Cumbria who can support the region with its healthcare needs. Open to health and bioscience graduates, the course will equip you with the practical skills, knowledge and qualifications to train as a doctor.

Study Medicine at a collaborative and inclusive medical school embedded in the communities of Cumbria

To study at Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, you will need to be a home fee-paying student with at least an upper second-class bioscience or allied healthcare degree, and you will need to complete the GAMSAT or UCAT entry test. You will be based in Carlisle for your studies, and throughout Cumbria’s communities for your placements.

Successful students will graduate with an MBBS from Imperial College London, one of the leading medical schools in the world, all whilst studying in the heart of Cumbria. If you have been contemplating a career in medicine, but would like to remain in or return to Cumbria, then the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine is a place to call home. You don’t need to be from Cumbria to apply for a place in the new School.

A place to call home

Based in Carlisle, the graduate entry Medicine programme has been designed as an inclusive, supportive course that takes into account what it means to return to studies after completing your undergraduate degree.

Dr Sohag Saleh, Head of Admissions, Inclusivity and Outreach said: “We’ve worked hard to develop a bespoke curriculum that will serve students who want to study and practise Medicine in Cumbria. It will be a more close-knit experience than being in a large cohort of students which you get in some environments. We want to widen access to Medicine and keep people in a region that needs more qualified doctors.

“The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine is designed to focus on the student experience while incorporating assessments to meet the requirements of the General Medical Council. It has been developed by experts who have significant experience in delivering and changing medicine.”
