Cumbria’s new medical school now open for applications
 name

Applications for the new graduate entry programme in Medicine at the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine have opened for the first time today.

Our unique partnership between the University of Cumbria and Imperial College London will focus on training doctors in Cumbria, for Cumbria. Based in Fusehill Street, Carlisle, the medical school will open its doors to the first cohort of students in September 2025.

Head of the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, Professor Mary Morrell, said: “There is a real opportunity to improve the outcomes for patients in Cumbria through training a skilled workforce of innovative and research informed doctors, who can go on to work in the region. Our School has been years in the planning, so for us to be opening our applications to the region’s future doctors is incredibly exciting.

“We particularly welcome applications from prospective students in and around the north west, or those who have links or an affinity in the region. We look forward to welcoming our first students next year.”

The four-year programme focuses on training doctors in Cumbria who will support the region’s healthcare needs. Open to health and bioscience graduates, the course will equip you with the practical skills, knowledge and qualifications to be a doctor.

Students will initially be based in Carlisle for their studies but will be on placements throughout the region to gain experience of practising medicine in a wide range of settings throughout Cumbria. Successful students will graduate with an MBBS from Imperial College London, one of the leading medical schools in the world, all whilst studying in the heart of Cumbria.

Applications for the Graduate Entry Programme in Medicine close on 15 October 2024 at 18:00 BST.
