Briefly describe your career progression from graduation to where you are now
I worked in both middle and first schools, ultimately as Deputy Head. I completed both an advanced diploma and M.Ed at the University of Cambridge both in children’s literature, before moving into primary PGCE teaching at the university. I taught primary English and professional studies which involved mentoring trainees on school placement. Since retiring I have written a number of teacher resource books mostly for Scholastic Education and I review children's books for UKLA.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your job?
Now I'm retired - flexibility!
What are your ambitions, now and in the future?
I am currently seeking a publisher for a children’s novel I have completed. I have plans for writing a second.
Looking back, what advice would you give yourself when you just graduated?
Keep in touch with your college friends.
What top tips would you give to new alumni who are wishing to pursue a similar career to you?
Don't be afraid to be ambitious, but keep an open mind about what your trajectory might be. I was encouraged to take on headship but I knew it wasn't right for me. I would not have expected to move into teacher education but I'm so glad I did. Do what feels right for you.
