It’s normal to feel nervous when you’re applying to university through Clearing – this is a big moment in your life! But with a bit of planning, it’s possible to stay positive and keep your stress levels under control. Below, we’ve shared some of our top tips for coping with Clearing and results day.
Do your research
One of the best things you can do in the lead up to results day is to make sure you’re prepared. Do some research into the universities and courses you’re interested in so that, should you need to, you can start making calls as soon as Clearing hotlines open.
Even if you have your heart set on your firm choice, it’s worth having some backup options. This way, if you don’t get the grades you need for your offers, you have one less thing to worry about in the morning.
Have a plan for results day
Try to keep results day free. If you don’t get your predicted grades and need to secure a place through Clearing, being at home can make the process a bit easier.
Universities will only speak to you, not your parents or a teacher, so depending on how many universities you decide to contact, you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to make some calls.
Look after yourself
One of the best ways to stay positive and manage your stress levels in the lead up to results day is to make sure you’re looking after yourself. Try to:
Get a good night’s sleep
Regardless of your grades, results day can be long. We know you’ll be eager to get up early and head to your school or college to pick up your results, so get a good night’s sleep. If you enter Clearing, you'll want to feel fresh and alert.
Stay hydrated
Remember to drink plenty of water and have some breakfast too (if you can!), as this will keep your energy levels up and help you to concentrate.
Do activities you enjoy
Although it’s great to do some Clearing prep before results day, you also want to enjoy your summer holiday and let your mind rest. Remember to spend time doing your favourite hobbies or activities – whether that’s playing sports, reading a good book or going on days out with friends and family.
Don’t collect your results alone
Results day is nerve-wracking – your grades will determine where you spend the next three to four years of your life, so don’t pick up your results alone! Arrange to meet your friends beforehand so you can support each other and celebrate your achievements together.
Stay off social media
If you don’t get into your firm or insurance places, seeing your friends’ posts on social media might make you feel down about your situation. So you don’t get distracted, try to stay off social media until you’ve secured a place in Clearing.
Think carefully about your offers
You can contact as many universities as you like during Clearing, so don't feel like you have to accept the first offer you receive. You will be spending at least three years studying your course, so you want to make sure you’ll be happy at your chosen university and that the degree programme will help you achieve your future goals.
Lean on those around you for support
While universities will want to speak to you, your parents or carers can still support you! Talk to them about your results and ask for their advice about the universities you’d like to apply to in Clearing.
They can support you in other ways on results day too, like checking you have plenty to eat and drink and ensuring you take regular breaks.
