Decide What you Want to Do
If you’re a University of Cumbria student, a great place to start is by speaking to our careers support team, who can help you to ascertain what the right path for you is. If you’re already in the world of work, do some research, maybe take a personality quiz to find out which role is best suited to your skill set (we’re not talking about Buzzfeed quizzes on what sandwich you would be!).
The National Careers Service has a quick and easy quiz to give you some great inspiration. https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/skills-assessment
Hit the Job Boards and Do Your Research
Once you’ve found a career path that sparks your interest, find out what opportunities are available.
Take a look at Indeed, Reed, Total Jobs, LinkedIn. Filter the results by salary, location and anything else that’s important to you.
Take your time to look through the job description and person specification. Make sure that you have the skills for the role, or that you would be able and willing to learn them.
Research the company, check out their social media, Indeed or Glassdoor reviews and the website. Make sure that you align with their values and the company culture.
Network! Network! Network!
There are so many amazing opportunities to meet like-minded people and potential employers in London. Take a look online and find meetings and events. Make sure to present the best version of you. Be confident and inquisitive. Talk about your studies, experience and areas of interest. Try to find a common ground and get to know people on a professional level to get the most out of the events.
Tweak your CV
You’ve found a role that excites you, and you’re ready to apply. You should ensure that your CV is tailored to the role you’re applying for. Make your experience and interests relevant. Use the job description and person specification, pick out key words and work them into your CV.
It shouldn’t be more than 2 sides of A4, but make sure you pack as much exciting information into it as possible!
