A Public Lecture by Prof Sally Elton-Chalcraft, Director of the Learning Education and Development Research Centre

This lecture explores the complexities of anti-racism in education through an investigation of the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of education?
  • What does successful school education look like?
  • What barriers do some children encounter and why?
  • Is English Education white, patriarchal and middle class?
  • How can schools provide equitable opportunities for all children?
  • How can schools be anti-racist?

With reference to a range of research and the professional experience and academic engagement of the speaker suggests possible solutions to dismantle injustice and promote equity including a need for teachers to:

  • Thoroughly understand the issues / problems
  • Openly engage in professional development alongside others
  • Bravely advocate equitable learning and teaching

About Prof Sally Elton-Chalcraft

Professor Sally Elton-Chalcraft was a school teacher and Head of Department working with 4 to 14 year olds for eleven years, then worked in three Universities as a Teacher Educator over the last two decades. Currently, Sally is the Director of the Learning Education and Development Research centre at the University of Cumbria. She is the convenor of the Religions, Values and Education special interest group for the British Education Research Association. Sally teaches on undergraduate, graduate, masters’ and doctoral programmes and publishes in the areas of Religious Education, anti-racism, the Prevent Policy, British Values, special educational needs and school leadership. She has been invited to give keynotes in India, Germany, Ireland and the UK. Throughout her career as a primary school teacher, teacher educator and academic, Sally has been passionate about exploring issues of social justice and making education accessible and thought provoking leading to a fairer world.

What is a public lecture?

Public Lectures are formal lectures that are held both in person and online. The lecture and question period usually last for one hour, followed by a networking reception.
