Tell us a little about yourself

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my profile.
Prior to becoming a university lecturer, I was a police detective sergeant and have extensive experience of leading teams dealing with serious, serial, and complex crimes. I investigated all aspects of exploitation including modern slavery and human trafficking offences. Safeguarding remains an integral part of my work and my own ongoing academic research.

What modules do you teach?

I deliver a range of modules across all levels, from Managing Criminal Enquiries, to Investigative Interviewing. My modules are focussed on developing students’ transferable skills as well as theoretical understanding.

What makes your course different?

There are so many factors which make our course different. Deeply embedded within the School Of Justice, the Security, Intelligence and Investigation degree provides an opportunity to learn about aspects of The Criminal Justice System, from all angles, delivered by those with lived experience of it.

What advice would you give to students considering studying on this course?

Especially with our degree, there are plenty of opportunities to build links with local industry – think Sellafield, NTS, Cumbria Constabulary, CNC… As for advice, keep asking questions. If you do get the opportunity to attend a scheduled guest input, probe that speaker to gain as much of an insight as you possibly can, whilst you have them there in front of you!

What’s your favourite thing about teaching at Cumbria?

What’s not to like?!? As with any professional role, you get out what you put in. I have really enjoyed securing links with other faculties including The Institute of Health in order to provide an enhanced experience for my students.

What might surprise people to learn about you?

I am a qualified radio broadcaster and I had my own radio show (I will take requests).
