My name is Mahar Haroon Sagheer, and I am currently working for the University of Cumbria Students’ Union as the Academic Lead Officer. Throughout my time at university, I have been actively involved in various ambassador roles, academic projects, and student events, which have shaped my journey and helped me grow both professionally and personally. My experience at the University of Cumbria has been a mix of challenges, learning, and incredible opportunities, and I am excited to share my story.

Why did you choose to study your course – what or who inspired you?

I chose to study International Management because I have always been passionate about the global economy, trade, and how businesses operate on an international scale. The idea of working across different cultures and markets fascinated me. Moving to the UK was a big step, and although I initially had no idea what to expect, my communication skills helped me navigate the challenges. I was determined to gain an education that would prepare me for the corporate world while also enabling me to start my own business.

Why did you choose the University of Cumbria over other universities?

The University of Cumbria stood out to me because of its strong business programme and practical approach to learning. I was also drawn to the student support services and the welcoming environment for international students. The university offered great networking opportunities through events and ambassador programmes, which I knew would be valuable for my personal and professional growth.

If you’ve completed a placement within your degree: how have you found your placement(s)? Where was your placement, and what was it like?

While I haven't completed a formal placement, my involvement in various university business events, validation of modules, and ambassador roles has given me significant practical experience. Working on the validation of the International Business Management module allowed me to understand how academic programmes are structured and tailored to industry needs. Additionally, attending business and graduate events provided insights into how companies operate and recruit talent.

What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?

My journey started with a lot of challenges – being far from home, adapting to a new culture, and navigating university life. It was overwhelming at first, but my strong communication skills and willingness to learn from different cultures helped me adapt. There were moments of doubt, but I focused on building relationships, understanding cultural differences, and making the most of every opportunity.

How have your tutors supported you during your studies?

I have always felt supported by my tutors and staff members. One person who made a huge difference was Rose from the library – she guided me whenever I needed help, whether it was academic support or even something practical like finding accommodation. My tutors always encouraged me to push my limits and challenge myself academically, making my learning experience more enriching.

How is university life beyond your studies?

Being a student ambassador has been one of the most rewarding aspects of university life. I have participated in freshers’ days, health taster events, business events, graduate events, and inter-campus activities. These experiences have allowed me to travel, meet new people, and grow both personally and professionally. My favorite event was Freshers’ Day, where I had the chance to interact with new students, make friends, and introduce them to university life.

What would be your top tips for people thinking of doing the same course as you?

  1. Master research tools – Learn how to use SPSS, NVivo, Tableau, and Excel early on.
  2. Stay open-minded – Be willing to adapt, as international business involves working with diverse cultures.
  3. Network actively – Attend university events and engage with professors, alumni, and industry professionals.
  4. Be proactive – Take on leadership roles and participate in extracurricular activities.

As Marcus Aurelius said, 'Circumstances don’t reveal who you are; they reveal what you can be.'

What advice do you have for people thinking about applying to university?

My biggest advice is to believe in yourself and take the leap. University is a learning journey, and you don’t have to have all the answers right away. Research your course well, make use of all the available resources, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. The university staff and tutors are always there to support you.

What are your plans for the future, and how is your course preparing you for your potential career?

After completing my degree, I plan to find a suitable job in international business management to gain practical experience. Eventually, I want to start my own luxury clothing brand, Mors Rosa, and expand into the real estate sector. Beyond business, I am also passionate about giving back – I hope to open a charity in the UK to support students who want to study but cannot afford the financial burden.

What’s been the highlight of your time at university so far?

There have been so many great moments, but my favorite was Freshers’ Day. Meeting new students, making friends, and being involved in university activities made me feel truly connected to the student community. I also loved travelling between campuses for ambassador events – it gave me a chance to experience different environments and cultures.

Is there anything else that you’d like to add?

I just want to say that my journey at the University of Cumbria has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. I’ve grown as a person, built strong relationships, and gained the knowledge and experience to shape my future. To anyone thinking about joining university – embrace the challenges, take every opportunity, and believe in your potential.
