Meet Lloyd, who's studying on our BA (Hons) Wildlife Media programme, as he talks to us about finding his course through Clearing 2023, what the Clearing process was like, and how he has settled into life at the University of Cumbria.

Did you know what Clearing was and understand how it worked before you went through it yourself?

I knew what clearing was, but I had never been through the process prior. I found out about the course from an ad online!

What was your Clearing experience like with the University of Cumbria?

I was first drawn to the University of Cumbria because it was the only university offering a course in wildlife media, and I liked the look of the university overall. To apply, I phoned the hotline and received guidance on the next steps. My main concern was that applying so late might prevent me from getting a place. However, I felt very supported throughout the Clearing process, as all the hotline and university staff were friendly and helpful. The biggest challenge I faced was adjusting to the idea of going to a university so far away on such short notice, but I persevered and am very happy with my decision.

Do you have any advice for students applying to Cumbria/your course through Clearing? Would you recommend applying through Clearing to others?

Yes, I would recommend applying through Clearing as I thought I wouldn’t get the chance to go to university with the UCAS points I had after covid!

It’s been amazing... I have a great friend group. I’ve had the chance to go to the lake district almost weekly and spend lots of time doing my hobbies as they link in well with the course.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

I have enjoyed the various modules my course has given me the opportuntiy to study throughout the year - especially the end of year exhibitions. I have also enjoyed the freedom the university has given me to be creative and I have met many great students and lecturers.

The trips have also been very enjoyable and the lecturers have taken all feedback into consideration.

What do you enjoy most about studying at Cumbria?

I have enjoyed that the lecture groups are small meaning it's been easy to speak and get to know everyone on my course and other courses due to the collaborative nature of the modules.

Did you find a place to live easily?

Yes - I currently live in the Denton Holme student accommodation. I was able to confirm a place here within a week of applying for it!

How is university life beyond your studies?

It’s been amazing! I have met so many great people both older and younger than me, and I have a great friend group and live with many people I am close with. I’ve had the chance to go to the Lake District almost weekly and spend lots of time doing my hobbies as they link in well with the course.
