Sport, Coaching & PE student Rishit has ambitions of becoming a top-level cricket coach. He’s making the most of university life at Cumbria, gaining hands-on experience with high-tech equipment and learning the skills needed to help others succeed in sport. Carry on reading to hear about his course and find out what student life is like outside of his studies.
Why did you choose to study your course – what or who inspired you?
I chose to study Sport Coaching and PE because I have always had a passion for cricket and helping others improve and join sport. I am currently in my second year at the University of Cumbria, and I am excited about the journey ahead.
Why did you choose the University of Cumbria over other universities?
The University of Cumbria stood out to me because of its great location, supportive faculty and state of the art facilities. I was particularly impressed by the small class size for my course and hands-on learning opportunities using high-tech sports equipment such as the Optojump and timing gates. After attending an open day and speaking with students and staff, I felt a strong sense of belonging and knew this was the right place for me.
If you’ve completed a placement, how was it?
I had the opportunity to complete my placement at a sports camp, where I gained hands-on experience in coaching children. It was both challenging and rewarding, and it helped me develop my confidence and professional skills.
What challenges have you faced, and how have you overcome them?
University life comes with its challenges, and for me, the biggest one has been time management. Balancing coursework with other responsibilities was tough at first, but I am now making sure I allocate time in my day for all the activities I enjoy while trying not to procrastinate. Overcoming these obstacles has made me more resilient and prepared for the future.
How have your tutors supported you during your studies?
My tutors have been incredibly supportive and are always available to provide guidance and feedback. One moment that stood out to me was when my personal tutor went out of their way to see if there were any placement opportunities for me in cricket when I was having trouble finding one. Their encouragement and expertise have played a huge role in my academic success and personal growth.
How is university life beyond your studies?
Beyond my studies, I’ve had a great time making friends with my coursemates and playing club cricket here in the UK as an international student. I was shy and introverted at first, but everyone at the university has been so welcoming and social that it helped me open up and make friends in a new country.

What are your top tips for people thinking of doing the same course as you?
For anyone considering Sport, Coaching and PE, my biggest advice is to gain as much experience in coaching as you can. Practise research skills such as referencing, too – it helps to be fluent with research search engines such as google scholar.
Once you start, stay organised and don’t be afraid to ask for help – your tutors and peers are there to support you. Also, take advantage of any placement or networking opportunities that come your way.
What advice do you have for people applying to university?
Applying to university can be overwhelming, but my advice is to stay focused and do your research. Make sure you choose a course that genuinely interests you, and don’t stress too much about making the ‘perfect’ choice – you’ll grow and adapt along the way. If I could go back, I’d tell myself to worry less and live in the moment, enjoying the process along the way.
What are your future plans, and how is your course preparing you?
My goal is to be a top-level coach for a cricket team, and my course has given me the skills and confidence to work towards that. Through placements, projects, and coursework, I’ve learnt valuable lessons that will help me in my future career. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next!
What’s been the highlight of your time at university so far?
There have been so many great moments, but the highlight for me has been when we organised a sports day for children with SEND. It really brought together all of the skills we learned in first year, allowing us to organise, deliver and reflect as groups.
Is there anything else that you’d like to add?
I’m incredibly grateful for my time at the University of Cumbria and everything I’ve learnt along the way.
