Meet Daniel, who's studying on our BA (Hons) Primary and Early Years Education (3-11) with QTS programme, as he talks to us about finding his course through Clearing 2023, what the Clearing process was like, and how much he has enjoyed his first year at the University of Cumbria.

Did you know what Clearing was and understand how it worked before you went through it yourself?

I learned about Clearing with the assistance I received during my college days while preparing to join the university. I understood that it constitutes a hotline that one can call to secure a place on a course they previously had yet to apply for.

What was your Clearing experience like with the University of Cumbria?

I found the course I was interested in online and called the institution. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They promptly scheduled an interview for me, which was very comforting as I was nervous about applying. It was reassuring to speak with someone with experience with the courses I was interested in.

Do you have any advice for students applying to Cumbria/your course through Clearing? Would you recommend applying through Clearing to others?

In terms of education, the University of Cumbria offers a smaller cohort, which allows you to get to know your fellow students better. This is particularly helpful in teaching practice, as you feel more confident in front of your peers. I highly recommend applying through Clearing, as the course is very fulfilling. If I hadn't given Clearing a go, I wouldn't be in the fantastic position I am in now. This year I even have the chance to work in America this summer at a summer camp, practising the skills I'm learning at university, all thanks to one phone call to the Clearing line.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

One of the reasons why I love my course is the practical experience it offers. Specifically, the in-class placements have been a fantastic opportunity for me to gain real-world experience within a classroom setting. It's been an incredible experience to put into practice what I've learned in class and see how it translates into the real world.

Additionally, the best part of these placements has been the chance to connect with my peers and share our experiences. It's been fulfilling to exchange stories and insights with the friends I've made at university while learning from each other's experiences. Overall, I feel that the combination of practical experience and peer support has made my course an enriching and rewarding experience.

What do you enjoy most about studying at Cumbria?

With a smaller university, you don’t become a number on a register. Instead, you are able to maintain your individuality and grow within the community. You really become friends with your peers and lecturers... You get to know every person, and lecturers genuinely care about getting to know you and ensuring that you’re happy with your experience. When I attended a larger university, it wasn’t the right fit because I didn’t feel seen. But at Cumbria, I really feel happy and accepted as part of the community. If I hadn’t applied through Clearing, I'd still be in a place that was wrong for me.

Did you find a place to live easily?

I currently live at home and commute to campus for my lectures. This arrangement enables me to maintain my part-time job, have a supportive family network, and feel comfortable in my living space. However, I plan to live away from home for at least a year to gain confidence in living independently.

How is university life beyond your studies?

I am really happy and feel accepted within my cohort… We all became friends quickly and really enjoy spending time with each other. Additionally, we are also able to maintain friendships with the other group. Our lecturers are all former teachers, so they understand what it's like being in school, and they act more like peers and friends… They know us well, and we know them. They genuinely care about us, and I consider them part of our group.
