‘Drawings by Alan Stones’

An exhibition of drawings selected from work made over 48 years.  Alan Stones is a well established artist based in the Eden Valley in Cumbria. He graduated from St. Martin’s School of Art, London in 1971 and has been working full time as an artist ever since.  Alan has exhibited widely, including two solo UK touring exhibitions.  He says: “I love drawing and it is central to all that I do as a painted and printmaker.  This exhibition at the Vallum Gallery is an exciting opportunity for me to bring together key works from across my career.”

‘Luke McGarry Exhibition’

An exhibition in collaboration with the award winning Lakes International Comic Arts Festival, which attracts global comic art celebrities to Cumbria.  One such luminary is Luke McGarry, an illustrator, cartoonist, animator and designer from Manchester, now based in Los Angeles.  His cartoons have featured in The New York Observer and he has created animations and music videos for Universal Music Group & Epitaph Records, to name a few.  He is half of the design outfit Fantastic Html and sings & plays bass in the band Pop Noir.

‘POP - Brian Griffin Solo Show’

An international touring exhibition by award winning photographer Brian Griffin, recipient of the Royal Photographic Society’s ‘centenary medal’ for lifetime achievement, he has photographed diverse subjects including many stars of stage and screen.  Brian has worked extensively as a film director making TV commercials, music videos and short films.  He was commissioned by George Lucas to photograph the actors behind the scenes of the iconic ‘Star Wars.’  Brian’s client list is a ‘who’s who’ of celebrities and international corporations. He has produced work for iconic artists such as Kate Bush, Iggy Pop, REM & Sir Paul McCartney and global brands such as Levi, Coca Cola, Nike & Sony.

A showcase of film and photography produced by BA Wildlife Media students as part of their degree, featuring diverse work from detailed macro photography to drone footage of aerial landscapes, night time photography of constellations to documentary film making.

‘Prism Arts Collaborative Exhibition’

A collaborative exhibition between local arts organisation Prism Arts and our BA Fine Art staff and students.  Founded in 1987, Prism Arts has worked as an inclusive arts organisation and charity for over 30 years, developing a variety of projects that enable disabled people, young people and older people to engage in the arts. Their vision is - “a society where everyone can create, access, engage, experience, and participate in excellent arts practice irrespective of age, ability or health.”

‘Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2018’

This open competitive exhibition for 15-24 year olds across Cumbria is organised in partnership with the arts initiative ‘C-Art’ & regional arts development agency ‘Eden Arts.’  As part of ‘C-Art,’ ’Young C-Art’ aims to develop opportunities and provide valuable experience in the arts for young people in Cumbria, including as exhibiting artists and as curators.  For the ‘Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year’ exhibition, a Top 30 are selected by a panel of experts from 100’s of entries.  The Top 30 then feature in an online gallery on the C-Art website and are exhibited in The Vallum Gallery.

’BA Photography 2nd Year Expo’

This is a showcase of second year BA Photography work where students critically explore ideas and issues that concern the personal and the collective. The eclectic nature of the show is testament to the reach of the photographic medium and the imagination of the contributors.

‘The Degree Show 2019’

A celebration of our BA degree student’s work across all art forms, which takes place across the entire Carlisle campus, including within the Vallum Gallery, with performing arts showcase events in the theatres and film screenings in the lecture rooms.

‘London Showcase 2019’

A selected exhibition of work from graduating students who were featured in the University of Cumbria’s two prestigious London showcase visual arts events.

‘Free Range’ is a summer season of graduate art, design and photography exhibitions, held at the Old Truman Brewery, London, forming the largest creative graduate showcase in Europe.  3,000 students take over 3 floors of warehouse space showcasing their work, with exhibitions changing weekly.

Design & Art Direction (D&AD) is a British educational charity which exists to promote excellence in design and advertising.  Institute of Arts students exhibit their work annually in the Design & Art Direction ’New Blood’ festival, which also takes place at The Old Truman Brewery, London.
