Biography

I qualified as a mental health nurse in September 2002. I gained a distinction in my nursing diploma. I find being a nurse incredibly rewarding and I have a record of being committed to person-centered care which I have gained from the experience of nursing in diverse clinical areas.

I am currently employed at the University of Cumbria as a lecturer in mental health nursing. I have completed a PG Cert in teaching and learning in higher education. My action research supports critical reflexivity in nursing students and involves clinical supervision and reflection. My critical argument involves how to support reflection in students who are neuro-diverse and I wish to examine this further.
I am studying for the MSC in Practice Development as this will vastly extend my knowledge and will support my teaching. I have an academic interest in clinical supervision, debriefing after clinical adverse events, lived experiences, and serious and enduring mental illness and suicide prevention.

I am enthusiastic about sharing the lived experience of my mental illness, and I have been awarded a seat on the Diverse Experiences Advisory Panel facilitated by the Mental Health Foundation which will “advise and inform the Scottish Government on the development and delivery of mental health policy.” The panel is focused on social inequality, it is a three-year project.
