Recent external roles
I have 15 years experience working within the Emergency Department, covering roles from Staff Nurse to Clinical Leader, before completing the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice at the University of Cumbria and working as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner.
As an ACP I managed complete episodes of care for those accessing the provision of the Emergency Department. This was often autonomous but also as part of the Emergency Department and wider inpatient teams.
This included the use of consultation frameworks, history taking and examination skills; the ordering and interpretation of diagnostics such as imaging and lab results to enable accurate diagnosis and optimal management/treatment for the patients in line with best evidence standards/guidelines and trust protocols. Using accurate safety netting and discharge advice to ensure the safe discharge of patients or liaising with specialists to ensure timely admission for those who require further management.
My experience spanned many specialties or areas of practice including minor injury or illness, Frailty, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Gynaecology as well as Paediatric patients.
My role also included the clinical supervision of both nursing and medical colleagues, incorporating the teaching of various skills including practical skills, clinical examination, and consultation skills as well as the underpinning theory. Providing formal and informal feedback and sign-off where necessary to set standards for clinical performance. This was achieved by exploiting a variety of learning opportunities from formal teaching sessions to demonstrations on shift.
I have also held the role of triage trainer, responsible for educating nursing staff in the application of the Manchester Triage System to help safely prioritise patients, whilst auditing these processes and responding to underperformances via direct supervision.
Alongside the clinical, teaching and leadership roles, I was also involved in several innovation projects during my time in clinical practice. These included the development and introduction of an electronic triage system, improvement in the minor injury unit service provision and transformation of nursing documentation records.
