Biography

I am a full-time lecturer in Midwifery at the University of Cumbria, teaching all year groups of our BSc, MSc and apprenticeship programmes, and providing learners personal support academically and while in practice. I am module lead for a number of modules and also teach on the Return to Practice Midwifery Programme, the NIPE stand alone course, in in the future, the Apprenticeship Paramedic Programme. As a Midwifery Lecturer I have the additional responsibilities of Interprofessional Learning Lead for Midwifery and SIM Champion for Midwifery. I am proud to facilitate and build on the simulation learning environment and equipment that we offer our learners and seek opportunities to collaborate with other teams at UoC and external universities for innovative new experiences.

Prior to becoming a lecturer in midwifery, I worked as a clinical midwife at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, as a hospital-based midwife, after rotating through all midwifery and neonatal settings in both hospital and community. My area of passion being the clinical acute setting and emergency care, but also making the experience of birthing people with additional care needs a calm and positive experience.

I still work clinically around teaching, ensuring I keep my skills as a clinical midwife and supporting students in clinical practice, which is where the drive to become a lecturer in midwifery began.

I gained my BSc Midwifery (Hons) at the University of Leeds, which as a Russell Group University had a large focus on research, providing good foundations for involvement in future research. At UoC I am working towards a Post-Graduate Certificate in Learning for Higher Education (PGLT) and a Masters Qualification (MSc), with the possibility of further research opportunities to help improve the lives of those entering into maternity care.

I have a background in Policing and Fire Search and Rescue, as well as Chemistry and Biochemistry at a Quality Assurance and Developmental level, providing me with a large variety of experiences to deliver and support STEM and Acute Care to our learners.
