How to recruit students and graduates

Opportunities for engaging students and graduates in your business

As an employer, you will want to recruit employees who can bring real benefits to your organisation. The University of Cumbria has a long history of developing work-related degree courses which ensure our students and graduates understand what is required of them in the work place.

We can offer your business free advice and support on recruiting:

  • Seasonal, part-time and temporary roles
  • Short work experience placements
  • Paid internships
  • Graduate roles

We use a variety of methods to advertise your opportunities to our students:

  • My Career Enriched: the University of Cumbria career hub, My Career Enriched, enables you to promote opportunities to students and graduates, book places at our careers events and send queries to our team. Register free at https://mycareerenriched.cumbria.ac.uk/.
  • Social Media: @uoccareers We can promote your opportunities through our Twitter feed.
  • Academic colleagues: Relevant subject-specific opportunities can be emailed to academics for them to share directly with our students
  • On campus: We can display posters on noticeboards on campus. Contact us to find out more about this as well as careers events and other on campus recruitment activities.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for Advertising Vacancies and Privacy Notice for Employers.

Your recruitment options when engaging with students and graduates:
There are many different ways you can provide opportunities for our students and graduates for the benefit of your business. From internships to work placements, graduate schemes to graduate jobs, here are some examples of some of the options you may consider.

Contact us if you would like to discuss your business needs and what the best options may be for your requirements.

  • Internships: For short-term projects or support during busy periods. Typically last 2-6 months.
  • Work placements: 9-12 months between a students’ 2nd and 3rd year of study. Provide an opportunity for the student to deliver their expertise in your organisation whilst developing their skills.
  • Graduate schemes: A structured training programme to develop future talent. Normally 1-2 years in length.
  • Graduate jobs: A graduate job is different to a graduate scheme. Graduate jobs are any jobs that require a degree (rather than the structured training involved in a graduate scheme).
  • Part-time jobs: Many students have part-time jobs to support themselves financially. We would recommend no more than 15 hours per week.
  • Volunteering: Charities or not for profit organisations can offer volunteering roles to students and graduates who can bring valuable skills and experience to the roles.
