Module - Critical and/or Acute Care: Core Assessment and Management of the Critically Ill Adult

This module aims to prepare you to assess, manage and care for the critically ill adult, supporting the development of your theoretical knowledge to underpin the core skills (Step 2 competencies, as per National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care) required for these patients and their families. The module aims to work within the National Standards for Critical Care Nurse Education, which will underpin the content of this module and is relevant for registered nurses working in a critical care environment.

Course Overview

This module is the first of 3 core modules as part of the Critical and/or Acute Care: Critical Care pathway, Practice Development Framework. Creating the foundation of knowledge and understanding to complete the step 2 competencies and the building blocks for the step 3 competencies in the next core module. The student has the flexibility to study this module online, with live keynote lectures, group work and independent learning. Supported by an experienced senior lecturer with extensive critical care experience.

What you will learn

The learning outcomes are the development of knowledge and understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of critical illness. The key notes lectures, learning materials and activities are all underpinned by the current evidence base, guidelines and health care policy. The multi-disciplinary team approach will be at the centre of all the topics covered within this module, developing the students appreciation of the critical care team involved in the assessment and management of these patients.
You will be encouraged to reflect on your practice and unit practices to compare and contrast these with the evidence base. Considering your learning journey throughout this programme.
