This module gives you the opportunity to explore the ‘non textbook’ patient, the circumstances around their presentation and how best to proceed with treatment and support whilst still maintaining safe practice and patient centred care.

To enhance your knowledge and critical understanding of the principles underpinning the care of adults experiencing complex clinical needs, acute illness and including acute exacerbations of long term conditions.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  • Analyse the process of assessment and problem identification in the planning and evaluation of patient centred care.
  • Analyse the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions utilised in the management of the acutely ill adult, acknowledging complex clinical needs.
  • Appraise the key concepts, theories, evidence, guidelines and policy upon which practice is based.
  • Critically analyse how learning from this module has transformed your understanding of your practice.

The indicative module content for this course includes: concepts of emergency care and national policy drivers, clinical assessment and management of complex clinical conditions, effect of acute and critical illness and exacerbation of long-term conditions on body systems, pathophysiology and treatment of conditions affecting the body systems, principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, principles of patient centred care and professional ethical obligations required to care for patients with complex needs.

Guided independent study = 176 hours

Scheduled learning and teaching = 24 hours

Formative assessment: participation in Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) online thread or task activity.

Summative assessment: oral assessment / presentation (1 hour) plus written assignment of 3000 words.

The standard academic entry requirement for this level 7 module is prior successful study at level 6 or above.

This module is darwn from the MSc paramedic programme. To be eligible to study this module, you must be working in an appropriate emergency healthcare environment.
