UPLAND ENVIRONMENTAL LAND MANAGEMENT
Overview
Developed in partnership with sector experts including Land App and Farm Carbon Toolkit, these courses are suitable for upland farmers, land managers, advisors and new entrants.
Applied learning is delivered through farm visits, online and in-person tuition, part-time over several weeks. Various start dates throughout the year.

Farm Business Opportunities
This Farm Business Opportunities module will enable you to evaluate business opportunities relating to environmentally sustainably farming and farm diversification in the uplands. During farm visits you will explore upland farm diversification and regenerative farming. You will develop financial enterprise analysis skills and gain knowledge of relevant funding opportunities for public goods on upland farms. You will model the impact on farm finances of entering one or more environmental land management (ELM) schemes.

This Mapping Environmental Assets module, developed in partnership with Land App, will develop your skills and knowledge to produce a multi-layered digital map of public goods for an upland farm, moorland area or nature reserve.

Upland Farming for Net Zero, developed in partnership with the Farm Carbon Toolkit, will develop your knowledge of where and how greenhouse gases are emitted, captured and stored on an upland farm. Farm visits and theory sessions will enable you to compare farming practices and land management options, with climate impact in mind. You will complete a quantitative farm carbon audit and make practical recommendations for actions towards net zero emissions.

Trees on Farms & Fells
Trees on Farms & Fells, created in partnership with the Forestry Commission, will develop your knowledge of the opportunities for integrating trees with agriculture on upland farms in England. Through visits, workshops, and online sessions, you’ll explore the benefits, challenges, management tips, advice, and funding options. By the end, you’ll be able to create a simple tree action plan for an upland area.
Explore courseFrameworks for Landscape Restoration
This course will help you understand the policies and guidelines for landscape restoration in the UK, as well as the tools available to plan and carry out restoration projects. Using a real world location with multiple restoration possibilities, you’ll work through the steps needed to choose and start a project. In small groups, you’ll put together a business plan for your chosen restoration project and present the options available to support it.
