Course Overview

This programme will introduce learners to standard project management terminology before moving into more technical aspects of project management associated with establishing the baseline (time, cost and scope) and then monitoring progress. The course takes a particular focus on financial aspects of project management including the initial cost / benefit analysis and then tracking of actual costs against those forecast.

Course Structure

What you will learn

Students will learn industry standard terminology and skills associated with project management. there is a particular emphasis on technical and financial skills development to enable a sound baseline schedule to be developed which can then be tracked as work is underway.

Year one

There are three modules on the programme, each delivered over a 6-7 week period in day release mode.

  • Principles of Project Management
    The first module introduces standard project management terminology, drawing on the latest version of the Body of Knowledge published by the UK Professional Body for Project Management, the APM (Association for Project Management).
  • Project Planning and Resource management
    The second module is more technical in nature, making use of software packages that can be used to construct project schedules. This second module focusses on planning and resource management for project schedules and will introduce concepts such as network precedence diagrams, Gantt charts and resource optimisation.
  • Project Finance Management
    The final module develops your understanding of two main financial aspects of project management, the financial appraisal that underpins investment decisions and then earned value analysis which enables project progress to be tracked against that which was expected.
