MSc - Psychology: Environment, Health and Wellbeing

Course Overview

Our innovative programme provides the first step to enable you to pursue a career in fields related to environmental psychology or health and wellbeing. We’ve earned a great reputation nationally for our cutting edge research methods and you'll be taught to use differing and specialist methods, equipping you for future challenges and advancing your career prospects. This pathway brings together both subjective and objective wellbeing by looking at the interaction of mental health and the environment with wellbeing.

This course is delivered either distance learning, or face to face at our Fusehill campus in Carlisle. At numerous points during the year, you will be invited to attend optional residentials at our variety of campus locations. These residentials offer opportunities to meet your peers and academics with opportunities to discuss modules (Outdoor Spaces, Health and Wellbeing, Environmental Psychology) and dissertations.

Course Structure

What you will learn

On this programme, you will develop your specialist knowledge and understanding of contemporary theory and professional practice in social sciences. During this time, you will explore the influence research, policies, and practice have on your chosen discipline.

Year one
  • Research Skills and Methods
    An introduction to a range of qualitative and quantitative methodology.
  • Professional Values and Ethics
    Engage in a series of critical debates; develop an understanding of a number of ethical and practice issues that you may face within the workplace.
  • Negotiated Learning
    Independently undertake a negotiated piece of work.
  • Outdoor Spaces, Health and Wellbeing
    Explore how the use of outdoor spaces can promote the health and well-being of people and environments.
  • Environmental Psychology
    Take an in-depth and critical look at environmental psychology as a multidisciplinary theoretical and practical area.
  • Organisations and the environment
    Develop a critical understanding of the interrelationship between organisations and the environment.
  • Dissertation
    An opportunity to demonstrate your competence in critically reviewing, synthesising and drawing conclusions from the literature and research from your chosen area within psychology and the applied social sciences.
