Lesson Planning

At the early stages of learning to be a teacher, students need a detailed understanding of that factors to be considered in planning a lesson. Therefore, when beginning placements, we expect students to use the template that the university provides.

Download the Lesson Plan Template

On Developing and Extending placements there are more lessons to be taught to more children; so written planning requirements can be more flexible. At this stage; The student (only with their associate tutor's agreement) may use a school planning template or design their own.

The University of Cumbria would not expect students to be working soley from MTP's (weekly plans) until Extending phase.

Individual lesson plans should be provided for all observed lessons.

Mentor Training

Mentor training materials for Secondary Trainees are available in our Mosaic Mentor training platform. You will receive login information of receipt of your email address- when we confirm placements.

All accredited ITT providers should ensure that all mentors receive sufficient high-quality training to ensure they can effectively support a trainee teacher to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to successfully complete their ITT school placement. Mentor training (and relevant prior learning) provides mentors with the knowledge and skills they need to undertake the role, including knowledge and understanding of the ITT core content framework and its underpinning evidence, and of the ITT curriculum which the trainee will be following.” University of Cumbria: believe that our mentor training curriculum always has focussed on

• Building on the range of mentor training provision we already had in existence

• Sequencing the progression of mentor training

• Respecting colleagues substantial experience and built upon it

• Engaging Mentors through online autonomous training

• Acknowledged mentors’ wide range of experiences (You are guided to appropriate training tiers)

• Encourages professional development through self-assessment

• Develops transferable skills to induction tutoring, performance management and coaching To this end, we will continue to work with each and every mentor throughout our ITE Partnership, to identify the training most appropriate to their existing experience, skill and expertise in role.

We will identify the ‘essential’ areas of focus for all mentors, and through ongoing high quality QA activity discuss and advise on what is the most appropriate next steps in development. We will continue to allow your professional articulation of prior training to dictate where best to access (tier) our suite of high-quality resources (flow chart and audit questions). We look forward to these discussions through our Lead mentor team.
